How to pass the NLCS 7+

The NLCS 7 plus assessment is challenging and competitive and requires proper planning to boost the chances of success.

About North London Collegiate School

NLCS is one of the UK’s leading independent girls’ schools, known for its academic rigour, rich extracurricular opportunities, and emphasis on fostering independent thinking. Located in Edgware, NLCS provides a dynamic and stimulating environment where bright and ambitious pupils thrive. The 7 Plus entrance exam for North London Collegiate School (NLCS) is a highly selective process, assessing academic excellence, reasoning skills, and intellectual curiosity. With increasing competition for limited places, thorough preparation is essential for success.

Applying for the NLCS 7+ assessment

The NLCS 7 plus is extremely competitive. With a strong reputation for academic excellence, the school seeks girls who demonstrate outstanding potential across a range of subjects. The admissions process is designed to identify candidates who will benefit from and contribute to the school’s intellectually challenging and creative environment.

The NLCS 7 Plus Format

The NLCS entrance exam at 7 Plus is designed to assess a child’s aptitude in key academic areas. There are two rounds of assessments:

First Round Assessments

  • English â€“ Reading comprehension and creative writing, assessing language proficiency, analytical thinking, and expression.
  • Mathematics â€“ A challenging paper testing number fluency, problem-solving, and logical reasoning.

Second Round Assessments

  • Group Activities â€“ Girls are observed interacting in a class setting and assessed on their communication, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning.

Strong Academic Expectations – What the NLCS 7 Plus Assessment Looks For

NLCS seeks academically ambitious and curious candidates who demonstrate:

  • A love of reading and the ability to engage critically with texts.
  • Strong creative writing skills, with imaginative and well-structured narratives.
  • High-level mathematical ability, including problem-solving, arithmetic fluency, and reasoning skills.
  • An inquisitive mindset and confidence in expressing ideas.

Children sitting the NLCS 7 Plus entrance tests in January of Year 2 are expected to be working at an advanced level. Successful candidates typically have experience with:

  • Reading and interpreting complex texts with inference and analytical skills.
  • Writing fluently, using varied vocabulary and sophisticated sentence structures.
  • Solving multi-step mathematical problems confidently.
  • Thinking critically and demonstrating intellectual agility in reasoning tasks.

Academic Preparation – Aiming Beyond Year 2

Girls from state schools may find the expectations at NLCS significantly beyond the standard national curriculum. Many independent school candidates will have been exposed to advanced Maths and English concepts from an early age. We recommend organised preparation and additional support to bridge any gaps and build confidence ahead of the assessments.

To maximise success in the 7 Plus exam, preparation should be comprehensive and strategic. Key elements include:

  • Encouraging broad and challenging reading to develop comprehension and vocabulary.
  • Practising creative writing exercises regularly.
  • Strengthening mental arithmetic, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning skills.
  • Engaging in verbal and non-verbal reasoning exercises to sharpen logical thinking.
  • Developing interview confidence through discussion-based activities and collaborative tasks.

How to Prepare for the NLCS 7+ Entrance Exam

Most successful candidates begin preparation well in advance. Families often start structured learning from pre-reception, ensuring that by reception and Year 1, children have built strong literacy and numeracy foundations. By Year 1, pupils should be comfortable with Year 2 and early Year 3 material, particularly in Maths and English, to meet the high expectations of NLCS.
