Katie’s Story

Family Aspirations

Katie’s parents were worried because their daughter had been diagnosed with Dyslexia in Year 4 and she was behind in her spelling, handwriting and creative writing. As the work towards 11 Plus preparation began in earnest at her prep school, they were aware that she was really struggling with comprehension and creative writing. Her underlying ability was good but this was a big barrier for school assessments.

Academic Diagnosis

We recommended an expert and compassionate Education Psychologist to Katie’s parents and this appointment changed everything for them. Firstly, the Ed Psych was able to understand Katie’s underlying abilities and identify her academic strengths as well as those areas where she was struggling. Katie was brilliant at spatial reasoning, big picture thinking and artistic pursuits. This made the family feel much more positive overall and also pin pointed where Katie could score well on her 11 Plus. Secondly, the Ed Psych offered practical ideas to help Katie work better in her English lessons, such as working on a laptop and learning to touch type.

How we helped

We helped Katie’s family identify schools which would actively welcome Katie and empower her, rather than leaving her feeling defeated. We then found her an English tutor, with specialist SpLD teaching qualifications. Our tutor worked with Katie every week until she took her 11 Plus exams in the January of Year 6.

Katie’s Success

Over time, and by building a strong and trusting relationship with our tutor, Katie’s English skills went from strength to strength. She also became a more independent learner by using assistive technology. Katie’s parents visited many secondary schools and found one where they had a good feeling about the SEN department and liked the Head of Learning Support. Katie was offered a place.
