Exam boards

Most exam boards do not offer Classical Civilisation and the primary exam board at GCSE is Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR).

OCR has two papers with no option of foundation level or higher level. Paper 1 is a thematic study of one of ‘Myth and religion’ or ‘Women in the ancient world’. Both components involve a comparative study of ancient Greece and Rome, and combine literary and visual/material sources. Paper 2 covers literature and culture, with students selecting one of the following three components: ‘The Homeric world’, ‘Roman city life’, ‘War and warfare’. Your GCSE Classical Civilisation tutor will help to prepare for each paper and improve how your child tackles these questions in a way to get top marks.

What a GCSE Classical Civilisation tutor will cover

  • Analyse ancient sources and interpret their significance
  • Develop well-structured, focused, and evidence-based exam answers
  • Improve essay writing skills, including planning and time management
  • Identify and address specific areas of weakness or misunderstanding
  • Build confidence in tackling both short-answer and extended essay questions
  • Feel fully prepared for GCSE exams and further study in Classics or related subjects

How to do well at GCSE Classical Civilisation with the help of a tutor

Success in GCSE Classical Civilisation depends on developing a solid understanding of the history, literature, and culture of the ancient world. A tutor can provide personalised support to help students master the key topics, including ancient myths, historical events, and cultural practices. With expert guidance, students learn how to analyse sources critically, make clear and well-structured arguments, and write essays that meet exam criteria.

Build confidence through context

Classical Civilisation isn’t just about memorising facts, it’s about exploring the ancient world in context and understanding its ongoing influence today. A tutor helps students connect stories, historical events, and cultural practices to the broader social and political life of Greece and Rome. This contextual learning makes revision more meaningful and memorable.

Understand the mark scheme

You may find it useful to be familiar with how the GCSE Classical Civilisation exams are assessed, so that you know how to help your child obtain the best mark that they can achieve. The exam board publishes detailed guidance on what they are looking for, including specimen marked answers.

Your child needs to know exactly what the examiner wants from them in every type of question. A GCSE Classical Civilisation tutor can teach your child how to ‘tick the boxes’ on the mark scheme to ensure they pick up as many marks as they can.

Make a revision plan

It is really important to start revision early enough and organise revision well. Ideally, it is good to get a strong revision plan together by the January of the exam year. It can sometimes be difficult to know the best way to structure revision. A GCSE Classical Civilisation Tutor will understand the order in which to prioritise each part of your revision.

Quality revision

Effective revision involves actively engaging with the material—whether through practising source analysis, writing essays, or discussing themes. But revision can also be passive and enjoyable, such as watching documentaries or reading modern retellings of myths. A tutor can introduce resources in a way that’s engaging and tailored to your child’s interests and learning style, to build skill and confidence in GCSE Classical Civilisation.

Sitting public exams for the first time

Children can feel immense pressure around the time of their first public exams and it is part of your job to help them navigate this. However, this can be a time of great personal growth for teenagers, as they juggle many subjects, manage hard work over many months and push through the exam nerves. Self-care, such as sufficient sleep and good nutrition are vital to help deal with exam season stress.
