GCSE Latin Tutor

We provide expert GCSE Latin tuition focused on grammar, vocabulary, and exam success in both language and literature components.

GCSE Latin Tuition

GCSE Latin explores the language, literature, and civilisation of ancient Rome. Because Latin is no longer spoken and has complex grammar, some students find it challenging. A GCSE Latin tutor can help build confidence with the language and bring Roman authors like Ovid and Tacitus to life, while also connecting students to the rich cultural heritage of the Roman world.

Exam boards

The main exam boards that offer Latin at GCSE are Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR) and Eduqas (part of WJEC).

Both exam boards have three papers with no option of foundation level or higher level. Paper 1 explores the language and is compulsory. For papers 2 and 3 students pick from components including Prose literature, Verse literature and Literature and culture. These two papers are open book for the Eduqas qualification, but not for OCR, hence why it is so important to know the exam board that your child is following. Your GCSE Latin tutor will help to prepare for each paper and improve how your child tackles these questions in a way to get top marks.

What a GCSE Latin tutor will cover

GCSE Latin students work towards a deep understanding of the Latin language and the historical and cultural context in which it was used. Students will use their language skills and apply them to the interpretation of original Latin texts, exploring themes such as heroism, justice, mythology and politics.

A GCSE Latin tutor will help students:

  • Develop fluency in reading and understanding Latin
  • Build knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and linguistic structure
  • Connect language learning with historical context through texts by authors such as Livy, Virgil and Ovid
  • Appreciate the richness and influence of Latin literature and culture on modern society
  • Improve critical thinking, translation skills, and literary analysis
  • Cultivate intellectual curiosity and interest in the classical world
  • Feel fully prepared for GCSE exams and further study in Classics or related subjects

How to do well at GCSE Latin with the help of a tutor

Success in GCSE Latin depends on building a strong foundation in the language’s grammar and vocabulary, alongside a growing confidence in reading and understanding ancient texts. Because the language has a different alphabet and complex grammar, it can feel unfamiliar at first. However, with consistent practice and the right support it becomes far more approachable.

A GCSE Latin tutor will support your child in learning vocabulary, grasping tricky grammar topics such as verb conjugations and participles, and build translational skills for understanding unseen passages.

Build confidence through context

Studying Latin is not just about learning the language, but also putting it into context within the rich world of ancient literature and culture. A GCSE Latin tutor will help your child make connections between the language they’re learning and the historical context of writers like Tacitus, Pliny and Cicero. This makes revision more engaging.

Understand the mark scheme

You may find it useful to be familiar with how the GCSE Latin exams are assessed, so that you know how to help your child obtain the best mark that they can achieve. The exam board publishes detailed guidance on what they are looking for, including specimen marked answers. OCR and Eduqas also provides a defined and restricted vocabulary list that a student should know.

Your child needs to know exactly what the examiner wants from them in every type of question, be it translational accuracy or ability to analyse cultural context. Your child then needs to learn how to ‘tick the boxes’ on the mark scheme to ensure they pick up as many marks as they can.

Make a revision plan

It is really important to start revision early enough and organise revision well. Ideally, it is good to get a strong revision plan together by the January of the exam year. It can sometimes be difficult to know the best way to structure revision. A GCSE Latin Tutor will understand the order in which to prioritise each part of your revision.

Quality revision

Students should actively revise key grammar rules and vocabulary, as well as practice unseen translations. Literature revision should include memorising key quotations, understanding the plot, and linking passages to wider themes. While Latin is not a spoken language, it can still help to read passages aloud. This builds fluency in recognising sentence patterns and can aid memorisation. A tutor can introduce resources and revision techniques in a way that’s engaging and tailored to your child’s interests and learning style, to build skill and confidence in GCSE Latin.

Sitting public exams for the first time

Children can feel immense pressure around the time of their first public exams and it is part of your job to help them navigate this. However, this can be a time of great personal growth for teenagers, as they juggle many subjects, manage hard work over many months and push through the exam nerves. Self-care, such as sufficient sleep and good nutrition are vital to help deal with exam season stress.
