Channing 11 Plus Open Days
Channing host multiple Senior School Open Days in the Summer and Autumn terms for prospective students. You can book tickets for these on the school website. There is also a Virtual Open Event where you can hear from the Headmistress, staff and pupils and be guided through a virtual tour of the school. We have found girls who attend Channing 11+ Open Events are better prepared in interviews and more confident upon entering in September.
Applicants hoping to join Channing in 2026 can book a place on the September 25th open morning and October 7th open evening.

Channing 11+ Admissions
The first step to applying for Channing 11 Plus is to register on the school website. Applications are open all year round for three years in advance. Registration closes in mid November the year before you propose to join, so if you are applying to join in September 2027, you have until November 2026 to apply. The registration form required you to pay a fee of £180. Following registration, Channing will request a confidential reference from your child’s current Headteacher. Applications for a 2026 place must be submitted by the 7th of November 2025.
There are 55 places available at 11 plus at Channing for outside applicants. Additional places will go to children coming up from the Junior School. Girls who currently have a sister at the school are given careful consideration but are not given automatic priority.
Channing 11 Plus Exam Content
For Channing 11+ entrance, girls sit a Cognitive Abilities Test set by the London Consortium. The exam is split into six sections testing Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English, puzzles and problem solving, and comprehension.
When you apply, you must indicate where your daughter will take the exam. Some primary schools host the London 11+ Consortium assessment, and Channing encourages students to sit it there if possible, helping create a relaxed, familiar environment. Applicants may take the exam at any Consortium school. Channing holds the assessment on one day, usually at the end of November. If you can’t make that date, girls can sit the exam at another Consortium school they’ve applied to. The 2025 exam is scheduled for 28th November for entry in 2026.
The 100-minute online test includes a 30-minute break in the second half. Candidates will see a countdown clock on screen and must manage their own time. The first half has four timed sections: 20 minutes for Maths, 10 minutes for Non-Verbal Reasoning, 20 minutes for English comprehension, and 10 minutes for Verbal Reasoning. This section is adaptive—questions change based on performance.
Part two includes a 15-minute puzzle/problem solving section and a 25-minute creative comprehension. This section is non-adaptive, so all candidates receive the same questions. Overall the test assesses cognitive ability, critical and creative thinking, analysis, and problem solving. A familiarisation test is available on the Channing website.
Tailored tutoring could be key to helping your daughter stand out. From academic support to exam technique, our tutors can build the knowledge and self-confidence needed to tackle the online test. Furthermore, our specialist 11+ tutors have significant Channing entrance experience and can help keep preparation on track.
The Channing 11+ Interview
All candidates registered for the Channing 11 plus process are invited for a one-to-one interview with a senior member of staff. These take place in January, after the entrance exam. In previous years, the interview has lasted around 15 minutes, and girls were not asked to bring anything specific with them. During the interview, girls were asked about their interests—both academic and beyond the classroom. For those applying to join in 2026, interviews will be held on the 6th of January.
Channing is looking for enthusiastic, confident girls who will enjoy being at the school, the school will enjoy having, and who will make the most of what the school has to offer. It is important your daughter is able to engage and respond during a discussion.
To do well at the Channing 11+ interview, girls must clearly articulate their thoughts and answer the question asked—rather than meander around a point. While preparation is key to success, it is equally important that girls don’t appear over-rehearsed. If your daughter’s answers come across as scripted or unnatural, she will be less likely to receive an offer.
Understandably, the thought of an interview can be daunting for some girls, especially those who find it harder to express their views. For this reason, Mentor runs individual and group sessions every year to build confidence. By focusing on interview preparation and what to expect, we encourage children to develop strong answers and present their best self.
Ultimately, the interview is an opportunity for Channing to get to know each girl as an individual—beyond exam scores—and for your daughter to show how she would thrive in the school community.

More on Channing School
Channing is known for its high academic status, and for the kind, bright and independent girls it helps flourish. Despite the exceptional results achieved by girls, Channing has avoided garnering a reputation as a “hothouse”.
Being a smaller school, it ensures every student is visible, so that all aspects of her education are personalised and no one is left behind. However, its size means Channing does not offer as many subjects in the sixth form. It is not the most culturally or economically diverse school, but in recent years it has made efforts to change this. Lindsey Hughes became Headmistress in 2020. The popularity she brought from her previous role as Deputy Head of Lady Eleanor Holles in Hampton has only grown.
The main entry points at Channing are 4+, 11+ and 16+. There are over 650 girls aged 4–18. Channing encourages all its girls to find passion and skill in activities outside the classroom. It offers a wide range of clubs including art club, coding and robotics, stand-up comedy and chess. The ‘Adelante’ Spanish language programme is unique to Channing. Launched in 2016, it has quickly become a defining feature of the school. The aim is to ensure that all pupils leave with a high level of competency and fluency in Spanish.
Music is central to life at Channing, with 27 musical activities taking place weekly, from Theory club to Jazz Band. On most Fridays, Channing hosts the hugely popular “Music at Lunchtime,” where any pupil of any standard can play or sing a solo. Sporting achievement is celebrated. Girls are welcome to join clubs such as netball, football, tennis and cheerleading, or join tours, which have previously taken girls to Barbados for netball.
