How to get into Emanuel School Admissions Guide

Admissions Process at 10+ Emanuel School

Looking for a tutor for Emanuel School admissions at 10+? Find out more about how we can help your child get into Emanuel.

Are you hoping to apply for Emanuel at 10+?

For many pupils and parents, preparing for the 11+ can be very stressful and very competitive. Entry at 10+ can remove some of that stress, and those who are successful at 10+ are not required to take the 11+ the following year unless they are seeking a scholarship.

Based on this, entry at 10+ has become very competitive and it is worth noting that candidates are rarely made offers if they score less than 65% in Maths and English, however the average score of those accepting places is closer to 75% In addition to this, should you turn down a place at 10+ you will not be able to sit the 11+ at Emanuel, so do bear this in mind when deciding whether to apply.

Here is some background information, plus everything you need to know about the 10+ application process, and how best you can prepare your child.

10+ Exam Content

The exams will be English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning papers.

  • Maths: 45 minutes. The format of this paper will be the same as in previous years – an arithmetic and problem-solving section.
  • English: 45 minutes. The format of this paper will be slightly adjusted – the composition element will be incorporated into the comprehension section. In addition to short comprehension answers, there will also be at least one longer answer where writing a short passage will be required.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 30 minutes. This paper tests logical thinking and use of language and vocabulary.

To help your child best prepare for these exams, you can find practice papers for English and Maths on the Emanuel website, and there are an abundance of online resources, as well as our own Mentor papers which have been designed based on the competitive Independent Schools format. The Mentor team can help advise you about many routes from reading lists to puzzle games to top revision tips, and we have also produced a White Paper which helps to illustrate the many ways you can help your child succeed.

If you are wanting an experienced third party to help you stay on track with your preparation visit the Mentor Tutor page which has a range of specialist 10+ and 11+ tutors with significant Emanuel entrance experience. For some valuable top tips about how to deal with revision and exam stress visit Phil H’s video.

Interviews

All candidates registered for the 10+ process will be interviewed one-to-one as usual, and this happens prior to the exam. These interviews will now be held over Zoom and will run from Monday 2nd November. During the interview, your child will be asked about their academic interests and their activities beyond the classroom.

The thought of an interview can be quite daunting for some children who find it harder to express their views, which is why every year Mentor run individual and group sessions to build confidence. Focusing on interview prep and what to expect, we encourage children to develop answers and present their best self.

Scholarships

Traditionally Emanuel has had an excellent scholarship programme at 10+ and the school has used this to attract pupils who would otherwise have attended the Dulwich schools or KCS Wimbledon at 11+. As the academic standards at Emanuel have risen dramatically in recent years so the scholarship expectations have risen also. Many of our Tutors have had great scholarship success and are experienced with pushing the boundaries of learning for exceptional students.
