Founded in 1887, Streatham and Clapham High School is an independent day school for girls in south London. Nestled by Tooting Bec Common the school easily accessible by Streatham and Balham stations, with many girls from the local area attending. Streatham and Clapham has entry points at 3 and 4+ to their Early Years school, at 7+ to their Prep, at 11+ and 13+ to the Senior school, and at 16+ to the Sixth Form.
Head since 2012, Dr Millan Sachania is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Trustee of the Royal Society of Musicians. A Cambridge graduate, he tutored musicology at Cambridge before taking up the post of Director of Music at an independent girls’ school in Windsor. His influence has placed an emphasis on the arts at Streatham & Clapham, reflected in their scholarship offerings (Art, Drama, Music and Sport).
Renowned for their particular attention to pastoral care, Streatham and Clapham is not a hothouse but is nonetheless a school where girls can thrive. In 2019, 72% of GCSE grades were achieved at A/A* or 9-7. The school boasts a 100% pass rate at A level, and in 2019 achieved 67% of A levels at A*-B. Despite Streatham & Clapham’s reputation as one of the less academic south-west London girls’ schools, recent years have seen its results soar and 11 plus entry is becoming ever more competitive. The school is consistently over-subscribed at all entry points, so you need to prepare fully for the entrance exam and interview. This is a process that takes 12 months – we have developed an annual 11+ programme that builds each year, covering all your child needs to be ready for admissions.
The 505 senior school students enjoy sports including hockey, rowing, athletics, netball and cricket. In gymnastics and netball in particular, teams have achieved success at national level.
Streatham and Clapham High School is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, a charity that runs 25 independent schools in England and Wales.
UK students fees are £6,080 per term, whilst international students pay £6,910. Fees cover tuition, non-residential trips, all stationery, textbooks and scientific materials, and exam fees.
Bursaries of up to 100% are available for girls entering the school at 11+. They are means-tested but awarded on academic ability. If you would like to apply for a bursary, indicate this on your registration form.
We find that girls who have had the chance to visit the school before registering for admission are more confident throughout their 11 plus process. This gives them a chance to meet prospective teachers, current students and familiarise themselves with the school grounds.

For 2022 entry, registration needs to be completed by 19th November 2021 – the week before, on 12th November, if you’re also applying for a bursary or specialist scholarship. Along with your completed registration form, you need to submit:
At 11 plus, Clapham and Streatham High School accepts around 100 girls, a mixture of girls from their own prep school, other private schools and state schools. Priority is given to girls whose sibling already attends the school, and to girls who are transferring from another GDST school.
Offers for 11 plus places at Streatham and Clapham High School will be made from 11th February 2022. The deadline for acceptance is 3rd March.
Pre-Covid, the school set traditional 11 plus English and Maths entrance exams for external candidates. However, for 2001 they set the ISEB Common Pre Test. Streatham and Clapham is also planning to set an ISEB Pre Test for their 2021 11 plus exams. Your daughter will sit this at her current school or at Streatham and Clapham, in December 2021 or January 2022. In addition to the digital test, applicants will need to complete a piece of creative writing. We think that the school will return to traditional written exams for 2023 entry.
The ISEB Pre Test takes about two and a half hours to complete and covers the following topics:
For this format, timing is particularly important. Your daughter should work to a pace where she can pick up 1 mark each minute. This requires a lot of practice, as if a child is unsure of any answers in an ISEB test, they cannot return to that question later on as they can with a written exam.
At Mentor, we have many experts in the format of the ISEB Pre Test available to advise and tutor your child through this part of their admissions process. Although the process may seem daunting, we can help. Our knowledge of this test format proved invaluable for our 11+ families last year when despite the last minute switch to this format, over 90% of our 11 plus cohort achieved a place at their first choice school. All our pupils were offered a place at their first or second choice school.
Interviews for 2021 were suspended, owing to the Covid 19 pandemic, but candidates still attended the school for a familiarisation activity and a tour.
Interviews for 2022 entry to Streatham & Clapham will take place during the Autumn of 2021. This is an opportunity for girls to show how they would flourish at the school, beyond their academic abilities displayed in their entrance exam. Preparing for this interview the right amount is key. Answers should not appear rehearsed, but your child needs to be able to engage in insightful conversation and present their best self at interview. Teachers will be looking for confident, engaging girls who are keen to learn and can express themselves in conversation.
We offer individual and group interview practice sessions, providing children with an opportunity to build confidence, develop answers and present themselves at their best.
Each year, Streatham and Clapham offer academic scholarships worth between 5 and 20% of school fees. Every applicant is considered for an academic scholarship, so you don’t need to indicate your desire to be considered when you register your daughter.
The school also offers specialist scholarships in Art, Drama, Music and Sport, worth up to 25% of fees. For specialist scholarships, intent to apply should be indicated on your registration form. Find out more about the requirements for Art, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships on the Streatham and Clapham High School website.
We offer scholarship tuition, with an exceptional track record in helping children achieve these. Our academic scholarship specialists ensure that children learn much more than the 11 plus syllabus. Your child will learn much more advanced and unknown work, with our teachers’ proven methods.
We also offer a dedicated scholarship course to ensure the work is reinforced. Our standard 11 plus courses remain important, as one must be up to speed on the earlier parts of the paper in order to have the time to crack the later scholarship question in the exam.
Many of our over 250 tutors are 11 plus entrance specialists. Masters at teaching exam and interview technique, the one to one attention of an experienced tutor will prove imperative as your daughter prepares for their admission to Streatham & Clapham. Our tailored approach to tutoring for the 11+ and 40 years of experience in helping children gain admission to some of London’s most competitive day schools mean you’re in safe hands.
Over 80% of our tutors are qualified teachers, with many being examiners, head teachers or heads of department. All tutors have up-to-date DBS certificates and have been reference-checked. Where possible, we will match your daughter with a tutor who has taught at Clapham and Streatham High School themselves.
