Introduction to Streatham and Clapham

Founded in 1887, Streatham and Clapham High School is an independent day school for girls in south London. Nestled by Tooting Bec Common the school easily accessible by Streatham and Balham stations, with many girls from the local area attending. Streatham and Clapham has entry points at 3 and 4+ to their Early Years school, at 7+ to their Prep, at 11+ and 13+ to the Senior school, and at 16+ to the Sixth Form. Cathy Elliot will be joining as the new Head in September 2023.

Renowned for their particular attention to pastoral care, Streatham and Clapham is not a hothouse but is nonetheless a school where girls can thrive. In 2022, 82% of GCSE grades were achieved at A/A* or 9-7. The school boasts a 100% pass rate at A level, and in 2022 achieved 61% of A levels at A*-A. In addition, over 80% of 2022 graduates secured their first choice university. Despite Streatham & Clapham’s reputation as one of the less academic south-west London girls’ schools, recent years have seen its results soar and 11 plus entry is becoming ever more competitive. The school is consistently over-subscribed at all entry points, so you need to prepare fully for the entrance exam and interview. This is a process that takes 12 months – we have developed an annual 11+ programme that builds each year, covering all your child needs to be ready for admissions.

The 505 senior school students enjoy sports including hockey, rowing, athletics, netball and cricket. In gymnastics and netball in particular, teams have achieved success at national level.

Streatham and Clapham High School is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, a charity that runs 25 independent schools in England and Wales.

Streatham & Clapham High School fees

Students fees are £7,001 per term. Fees cover tuition, non-residential trips, all stationery, textbooks and scientific materials, and exam fees.

Bursaries of up to 100% are available for girls entering the school at 11+. They are means-tested but awarded on academic ability. If you would like to apply for a bursary, indicate this on your registration form.

11 plus open days at Streatham & Clapham

Streatham and Clapham offer Open Days for prospective parents and students from the summer to the Autumn term the year before they are scheduled to join Year 7. This is an opportunity to tour the school, hear from the Senior Leadership Team, and meet current staff and pupils. The next available events are on teh 30th of September and the 12th of October 2023. These are available to book via the school website.

We find that girls who have had the chance to visit the school before registering for admission are more confident throughout their 11 plus process. This gives them a chance to meet prospective teachers, current students and familiarise themselves with the school grounds.

The 11 plus exam

All applicants will be invited to sit the ISEB Common Pre Test on the 2nd of December. Girls can take this at their primary school or at Streatham and Clapham. This is an online, multiple choice, adaptive exam.

The ISEB Pre Test takes about two and a half hours to complete and covers the following topics:

  • Verbal reasoning: covering areas such as common words, antonyms, word combinations and letter transfer
  • Non-verbal reasoning: this topic tests areas including shape analogies and horizontal codes
  • English: reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and sentence completion
  • Mathematics: content for this is in line with the National Curriculum topics taught up to the end of Year 5.

For this format, timing is particularly important. Your daughter should work to a pace where she can pick up 1 mark each minute. This requires a lot of practice, as if a child is unsure of any answers in an ISEB test, they cannot return to that question later on as they can with a written exam.

At Mentor, we have many experts in the format of the ISEB Pre Test available to advise and tutor your child through this part of their admissions process. Although the process may seem daunting, we can help. Our knowledge of this test format proved invaluable for our 11+ families last year when despite the last minute switch to this format, over 90% of our 11 plus cohort achieved a place at their first choice school. All our pupils were offered a place at their first or second choice school.

Group Observation Activity and Creative Writing Submission

All Candidates will also be invited to take part in a group activity and creative writing task in leu of an interview. Candidates will be placed in small groups alongside current students and will be observed by staff as they are given a challenge to compete. This is intended to be a fun and interesting activity for candidates. Applicants will be tested on their problem solving ability as well as their team-work and collaboration skills. This is an opportunity for girls to show how they would flourish at the school, beyond their academic abilities displayed in their entrance exam.

At the end of the session, girls will be given a short creative writing task to complete.

We offer individual and group interview practice sessions and creative writing courses, providing children with an opportunity to build confidence, develop answers and present themselves at their best.

Get an 11 plus scholarship to Streatham & Clapham High School

Each year, Streatham and Clapham offer academic scholarships worth between 5 and 20% of school fees. Every applicant is considered for an academic scholarship, so you don’t need to indicate your desire to be considered when you register your daughter.

The school also offers specialist scholarships in Art, Drama, Music and Sport, worth up to 25% of fees. For specialist scholarships, intent to apply should be indicated on your registration form. Find out more about the requirements for Art, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships on the Streatham and Clapham High School website.

We offer scholarship tuition, with an exceptional track record in helping children achieve these. Our academic scholarship specialists ensure that children learn much more than the 11 plus syllabus. Your child will learn much more advanced and unknown work, with our teachers’ proven methods.

We also offer a dedicated scholarship course to ensure the work is reinforced. Our standard 11 plus courses remain important, as one must be up to speed on the earlier parts of the paper in order to have the time to crack the later scholarship question in the exam.
